Wincanton Town joined the Wessex Premier League in 2024/25, moving across from the Western League Division One after promotion. In their first Wessex season they finished 15th, but were 19th in 2025/26, although reprieved form relegation.
Their Wincanton Sports Ground home is one of the longest trips for many Wessex sides with the Wasps being the only Wessex League club in Somerset.
Wincanton were formed in 1890 and played in the Yeovil and District League for many years. In 2003/04 they entered the Somerset County League and three years later opted to join the Dorset Senior League, winning the title and promotion to the Dorset Premier League in their first season. A runner-up spot in 2012/13 enabled them to join the Western League.
The club were twice beaten in the Western League promotion play-offs in 2021/22 and 2022/23 but the following year an amazing 6-4 semi-final win over Wells City was enough to secure promotion even though they lost the final.
The Wasps best cup run was in 2022/23 losing to AFC Totton in the first qualifying round. They have reached the second qualifying round of the FA Vase four times.
The club moved to the Wincanton Sports Ground in the mid-1990s. The ground has a covered stand on one side and some covered standing on the other.
The ground (post code BA9 9RB) is not far from the A303 but follow the detailed directions on the club website. First Bus 58 runs from Templecombe station to Wincanton town centre from where it’s a 25-minute walk to the ground. Times are on the First Bus Somerset website.
