Downton achieved a respectable tenth place in the Wessex League Premier Division in 2025-6. But the highlight of the season was a remarkable run in the FA Vase, all the way to the quarter-finals where they lost 1-0 to Punjab United in Kent.
Downton were formed in 1905 and spent much of their history in the Salisbury & District and Bournemouth leagues, before joining the Hampshire League in 1968-69.
The Robins became members of the Wessex League in 1992-93. They were relegated to Wessex Division Two in 2004-5 but promoted straight to the Premier Division the following season thanks to the renaming of the divisions.
A brief two-season stay saw relegation to Division One in 2007-08, but Downton were promoted back to the Premier Division as champions three years later.
Another relegation in 2013-14 led to a ten-year stay in Division One, until Downton went up again in 2023-24. Despite losing their play-off final to Millbrook they were promoted on a points-per-game basis due to league reorganisation.
Aptly, the Robins play at The Nest in Wick Lane. The main features of this tree-lined ground are the 200-seater stand on the halfway line and a large building behind one goal housing the clubhouse and function room.
The village of Downton is in Wiltshire, close to the Hampshire border. The ground lies off the main A338 road, five miles south of Salisbury. Follow signs to the leisure centre or use postcode SP5 3NF. Bus X3 runs from Salisbury – get off at the Bull pub and it’s a six-minute walk. You can find more information on the club website.
